Oakland, Calif., police have launched an investigation after Los Angeles Angels star Anthony Rendon allegedly assaulted an Oakland fan on video Thursday night.
Major League Baseball is also said to be investigating the dispute. The video, posted on Twitter, shows the Angels third baseman confronting a competitor in the stands after claiming he was insulted by a crowd. The incident occurred the night the A’s beat their AL West opponent 2-1 at the Oakland Coliseum.
The fan in the video did not contact the Oakland Police Department, but officials confirmed they were investigating the “battery” incident. “What did you say?” Rendon can be heard asking the fan as he grabs his shirt. The fan responded with an inaudible sound.
Rendon then replied, “Yeah, you call me Ab–, huh?” The fan shook his head in denial, implying he didn’t refer to the two-time silver slugger by that term. (Another video appeared to show fans of the same A’s team yelling at the player before Rendon stopped, but it was unclear what he was talking about.)
“Yeah, you did. Yeah, m—f—,” Rendon said, still holding the fan’s T-shirt.
Rendon then let go of the man’s shirt and appeared to attempt to punch or punch him in the head before walking away. The fan had to back away from Lendon’s hand.
The Athletic’s MLB-only Twitter account shared a viral video of the brawl that had more than 9 million views as of Saturday. “Swing and misses seem very on-brand here,” one viewer of the clip commented on the Twitter thread, seemingly referring to Rendon, who went 0-for-3 twice on Thursday.
According to The Athletic, the Angels did not comment on the matter, but said Rendon will be explained before Saturday’s game against the A’s in Oakland.
The A’s and Angels are both scheduled to play Saturday at 1:07 p.m. PT.
