It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ashleigh VanHorn, a beloved student at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Ashleigh passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at the age of 21 after suffering a severe cardiac arrest.
Ashleigh was a talented and skilled midfielder for the Pitt-Greensburg girls’ soccer team, appearing in over 50 games. She’s also a hard worker and a quick learner, always trying to improve on and off the field. Ashleigh majored in Business Administration at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, where she was loved and respected by her peers and faculty.
Born and raised in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Ashleigh is a graduate of Hempfield Regional High School. She was a four-year football champion and was named to the All-Team First Team. She is also a member of the Beadling Soccer Club, which won the State Cup and reached the final of the 2019 Regional Championship.
Ashleigh will be remembered as a kind, sociable and respectful person who treated everyone with equal love and respect. She is passionate about football and enjoys spending time with family and friends. Her sudden and unexpected death left a great void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Ashleigh was born and raised in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. She is a graduate of Hempfield Regional High School, where she served as a football messenger for four years. While at Hempfield, she was named to the first team and was a member of the State Cup-winning Beadling Football Club and was a finalist in the 2019 Regional Championships.
At Pitt-Johnstown, Ashley continues to excel on and off the field. In 2021, she played 17 games, contributed 1 assist and 1 point, and made two goals at the same time. She studied Business Administration and is described by her family and friends as bright, focused and ambitious, always keen to learn and grow.
Ashleigh’s sudden death has left a void in the hearts of those who knew her. Her family and friends expressed sadness and disbelief at her untimely death. They remembered her as a kind, caring, sociable person who treated everyone with respect and kindness.
The Pitt Green Girls Soccer Team also pay tribute to Ashley and remember her as a valuable player who was always willing to do anything for her teammates. “It has been a privilege to coach Ashley and she has always been willing to do whatever it takes to help her team,” head coach Sarah Larson said. “We will miss them both on and off the pitch.”
The passing of Ashleigh VanHorn is a reminder of how fragile life is and the importance of cherishing every moment with the people you love. Her memory will live on through the many lives she touched and the legacy she left behind. Rest in peace, Ashley Van Horn.
