The truck driver, identified as 32-year-old Cole Pensick, a former offensive lineman for the Huskies, was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff’s office said Pensick was driving west and, instead of stopping at the stop sign, veered off the road and into the woods. Authorities determined he was not wearing a seat belt.
Pensic was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident is still under investigation.
According to Athletic Nebraska, former Columbus offensive lineman Kolpencik was a key player in 2013 and one of 30 Huskers to earn Academic All-Big Ten honors that year.
Pensick played for Lincoln Northeast High School and was a member of the Cornhuskers from 2009 to 2013. He redshirted his first season as a defensive tackle and worked with the scouting team. Over the next four seasons, he played 36 games, starting 14 of them.
Twelve of Pensick’s 14 starts came in the 2013 season, when he helped the Huskers lead the Big Ten in rushing. In 2013, his versatility, playing guard and center, came in handy as the offensive line dealt with numerous injuries.
The Big Ten coach named him a second-team All-B1G for the 2013 season. He also won the Cletus Fischer Native Son Award as a senior.
Pensick graduated from Nebraska in December 2012 and completed two semesters of graduate study during the 2013 season.
