Incorporated as a village on March 16, 1899, CYRUS now resides within sections 19, 20, 29, and 30 of New Prairie Township. It was originally platted by O. H. Dahl and Charles Olson on their 1866 homestead in 1881, whereupon they designated a section of the land as a village. The original name of Scandiaville was switched up in 1882 when M. Frank Cronquist – the first postmaster who built his store in 1881 – sent a request to the post office for a name change, which led to the suggestion of Cyrus by Olson.
