Who is Dawn Oxley?
In 1997, Ben Oxley met Dawn. They started dating and eventually got married in 1999. Alyssa, their daughter, was six years old when the marriage ended in 2004. However, Ben remarried in 2006 to Melissa Oxley. In addition to providing child support, Dawn had to share custody of Alyssa with Ben. This caused tremendous friction between them, which Ben’s attorney exploited to create conflict in their relationship.
Melissa called 9-1-1 at around 3:30 AM on February 21, 2008; she found Ben with a headshot with a shotgun. After looking into possible suspects, she pointed to an ex-boyfriend of Dawn’s. However, this person was ruled out as a suspect. A few months into the investigation, the police revisited Dawn to ask her about her living arrangement with James Matlean.
Dawn and James lied about their alibis and were closely scrutinized by authorities. In August 2009, Dawn confessed to her ex-husband’s murder and requested to be put in prison. Because of this, she was given immunity from prosecution and allowed to testify against the cause of her anger Ben. However, she never asked James to murder her ex-husband.
Dawn stated that she only desired Ben to disappear from the face of the earth. Additionally, witnesses reported that she drank with James the night before his murder. Her son also informed authorities that he and his mother planned Ben’s death so Dawn could stop paying child support and custody transfer to Alyssa.
Although she claimed to have fallen asleep on the couch that night, Dawn said James woke her up later by saying, “It’s done.” After that, she followed James to his mother’s house because he intended to leave his car there. As for her last contact with Ben, Dawn claimed she hadn’t seen him in weeks. In fact, she claimed to have seen him only when Alyssa paid a visit. Addressing her ex-husband, she stated: “I try to avoid him. He’s my ex-husband; our marriage was a disaster.”
