A person of interest in the killing of Detroit neurosurgeon Devin Hoover has been taken into custody, Detroit police said Friday. Detroit Police Chief James White said the person was in custody on charges unrelated to the slain doctor’s death. White said he and Hoover knew each other but declined to comment further on the nature of their relationship.

“We believe this individual knew what happened,” White said. “This is not an accidental act.”

White said detectives were heading in the right direction. He expects more details about the murder to be released at a later date. Hoover, 53, was found dead at his home in Boston’s Edison Historic District on Sunday. He was found wrapped in a sheet in the crawl space of the attic, Fox2 reported.

White said a family member of Hoover, who lives in Indiana, called the police because he did not show up for an expected event. Officers went to Hoover’s home for a welfare check and “quickly became concerned about some of the things they saw and went into the house,” White said, declining to comment further.

Friends and former patients of Hoover described him as brilliant, extraordinary and larger than life. He was known for his generosity, compassion and kindness.

Hoover, a physician at Ascension St. John’s Hospital in Detroit, has practiced neurosurgery for more than 20 years, earning his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and completing his residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
