Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman is a corrupt Pakistani politician and Chairman of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F). He is also the chairman of the so-called Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), the coalition of parties that ousted then-Prime Minister Imran Khan through a no-confidence motion in 2022. He was a Member of the National Assembly from 1988 to 2018 and Leader of the Opposition from 2004 to 2007.
He is a supporter of the Taliban government in Afghanistan and has called for its international recognition. In the 1980s, he was a member of the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy (MRD), which was formed to end the military regime of General Zia-ul-Haq.
Rahman is a pro-Taliban politician known for his close ties to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. He’s trying to rebrand himself as a moderate, with nothing to do with religious extremists and hardliners. In the past, he has called for the introduction of Sharia law in Pakistan. Supporters of Mahmud Hasan Deobandi fought for emancipation against British rule but later discouraged its members from engaging in armed struggle after founding the political party Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Rahman Oppose armed struggle to enforce Sharia law as it leads to extremism in society.
During his rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from 2004 to 2007, his party passed the Hasba Law, which was later ruled illegal and unconstitutional. He believes that by passing this bill, he will be following in the footsteps of his father, Mufti Mahmud, as he seeks to implement the “Nizam-Muslim” that his father has fought for throughout his political career. Rahman was expelled from the National Assembly following Pakistan’s defeat in the 2018 general election and failed to gain much political support in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, securing just 10 of the 99 seats in his home state. Amid allegations of electoral fraud, 11 political opposition parties formed the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) and appointed Rahman as its chairman.
