An employee of a manufacturing company, age 52, was getting ready to use a manual lathe to tap the middle of a 103-inch bar. The 24′′ stock is held in place by aftermarket fittings that rotate with the lathe because of the length of the steel, which protrudes from the exposed back of the lathe. On camera, the machinist can be seen attempting to remove a glove from the top of the lathe while it is spinning the rebar and operating.
He was dragged into the lathe between the motor and the spinning steel when his shirt sleeve got caught in the clamp. The machinist’s body swirled around the steel sheet as the lathe continued to rotate, striking the engine roughly 12 times.
An employee in the locker area went to check, shut off the device, and dialed 911. The somewhat unconscious mechanic was transported by paramedics to the hospital, where he was declared dead when he arrived. Blunt force trauma was the cause of death.
