Authorities have released the name of a 15-year-old girl who was shot and killed in St. Charles over the weekend. According to Lt. St. Charles Police Department spokesman Thomas Wilkinson, Lydia Elkin of Lake St. Louis, died Saturday night at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
St. Charles officers were called to the hospital just before 8:50 p.m. Wilkison said two teenagers, Elkin and a 17-year-old boy, were taken to hospital after being shot. Elgin was shot in the chest and the boy drove her to the hospital to report the incident.
Wilkison said the 17-year-old told detectives they were asked to meet with two people in the Oak Avenue and Perry Street area. The reason for the meeting has not been determined. When 17 and Elking arrived in the area, the two men who asked to meet approached them on foot, drew pistols and declared robbery. One of the armed assailants fired at the car, hitting Elgin in the chest.
St. Charles homicide detectives scoured the area Saturday night through Sunday with the help of the community and identified two teens as suspects.
“…St. Charles detectives located a 16-year-old white juvenile and a 17-year-old black juvenile in St. Louis County. Those two have been taken into custody,” Wilkinson said. “During the course of the investigation, a 9mm Smith & Wesson pistol believed to have been used in this murder was found and seized from a house in St. Charles.”
The boys were charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree assault and armed criminal activity in St. Charles County Family Court. Their names have not been released. Until the case progresses, the suspect is being held in a juvenile detention center, Wilkinson said.
