Rachel Dolezal was born in rural Montana in 1977. Her fundamentalist Christian parents Lawrence and Ruthanne were ever present in her life. White people criticized Dolezal for pretending to be black. They claimed that no sane white person would want to be black, which implied that they believed she was unstable. However, the criticism from the African American community hurt the most; they described her as ignorant and foolishess.

People accused her of playing the victim because she supposedly used the long history of black suffering in her country to do so. They claimed this was a continuation of the insulting tradition of “blackface”, which is when someone with European features dramatically changes their appearance to look more like someone from Africa. Additionally, these accusers claimed that her braided hair and darker skin tint were part of this tradition.
