Hibernian boss Ron Gordon has died at the age of 68 less than a month after announcing he was undergoing cancer treatment. The Peruvian-born American businessman, who took charge of the Edinburgh club in July 2019, released an open letter to fans on 3 February, explaining that he has been in medical treatment for most of the past year.
Chief executive Ben Kensell said the family was committed to “continuing to work towards delivering Ron’s long-term vision and plans for the club”. “Ron has a passion for football and through Hibernian Football Club his dreams, commitment and love are realized while always ensuring the club is the best version of himself to leave a lasting legacy,” a statement from the association said. the statement added.
“The Gordon family is determined to pull through. “Our thoughts are with Ron’s wife Kit, his sons Ian and Colin and the rest of the Gordon family. Ron may be our chairman and owner, but first and foremost he is a devoted family man with A close and loving family.
“At this difficult time, we would like to respect the privacy of the family as they mourn their loss.” Gordon took over Hibs after acquiring a majority stake in HFC Holdings, a company owned by Sir Tom Farmer and outgoing chairman Rod Petrie.
His son Ian is currently employed as the club’s head of recruitment. SPFL boss Neil Doncaster paid tribute: “Ron is one of the most respectable, hardworking, easygoing and passionate characters in our game.
“It was clear that Hibs quickly became much more than just Ron’s business venture – his palpable pride in being his manager and his relentless dedication to the club were the clearest evidence of how much he enjoyed being involved. “In just a few short years he has selflessly given his time and considerable talent to benefit Scottish football on a wider scale. “On a personal level, the excellent work he has done in driving the SPFL’s strategic review has been very rewarding.”
